Have you missed the WHY launch? Ever since the launch of this Wally-Hermès collaboration in October, we have been avidly following such good taste and avant-garde grandeur. Here is a sight into the yacht that is inspired by the hulls from the Greek age, a yacht that looks like a dream concept but is a whole new reality. And this is not only because it is a living space, similar to a small private island on the sea, but because it can cross the Atlantic four times with no refueling, and is the most environmentally friendly a yacht can be today. Since its launch last Fall all the way to the recent Abu Dhabi Yacht show this past month, the WHY yacht has been proving its timeless and limitless potential.

As I hope you had a chance to see in our film, the highlight of the recent Pavilion of Art and Design was certainly the truly avant garde design of Carpenters Workshop Gallery. If not, check it out and I promise you will be compelled by the gallery’s groundbreaking design-art pieces.

I recently had the opportunity to discover the BE Collective through one of the most exciting ways you can discover a company: by meeting up with one of their key creatives, in that case the young and talented Erik Munro. Guided by Munro and the BE team, SQUA.RE went for a visit of the fabulous studios of the BE Collective, hidden in a mews off the vibrant Marylebone High Street in London.

The BE Collective

The young and yet widely experienced BE Collective essentially provide every format of high-end creativity throughout four areas we avidly watch for at SQUA.RE: interior design, architecture, digital art and branding. Obviously, and to such extent, the BE Collective has its key values well put out, and you will see how throughout its projects, the collective’s focus is always on keeping differentiation and on a specialisation in projects requiring an exceptional level of design at the core of its work. Just a few weeks ago, we shared with you the VIP opening and visit of the Pavilion of Art and Design on Berkeley Square. Today it is time to share the experience, as we have filmed and walked through the galleries with some of the exhibitors to create an exciting SQUA.RE Events film. The event, a first of its kind in London, is sponsored by Ruinart, the prestigious champagne brand which has a tradition of being involved in all key events in the art calendar from Art Basel to the FIAC.

The film goes through the entire exhibition, starting with an overview of the pavilion from outside, and as soon as you come in, a sight of the magnificent portraits at the space of Barry Friedman of New York. Further down the hall, we get to meet with Jacques Lacoste, who runs the Galerie Jacques Lacoste in Paris. Here is what he said to us. Read the rest of this entry »

A few weeks back, as I walked past one of London’s most beautiful squares, Berkeley Square, around the corner from my home, I noticed a magnificent large white pavilion being built, and I had been wondering ever since what this was meant to turn into. The curiosity lasted only one day as I walked into the SQUA.RE office the next day and received a highly attractive pink invitation from Ruinart to the Pavilion of Art and Design London.

With our will to be more and more involved in the art sector, and with our continued passion for design and luxury, this was a must! But this was not a first as the Pavilion already was in London the past two years under the form of a smaller exhibition called DesignArt. The revamped fair is taking its inspiration from its origins: the Pavillon des Arts et du Design Paris which has been held for 13 years in the Jardin des Tuileries. The London fair is purposefully running at the same time as Frieze, encouraging London’s growth as a melting pot for art and design trends. Read the rest of this entry »

This past month has been a true resurgence following the quiet months of the summer. People’s attitudes towards life, creativity and work, people’s focus on their social life, people’s moods: everything has changed for the best. London Fashion Week and the London Design Festival have been great illustrations of such revival. As I’ve announced to you recently, we were planning on giving you a full video sight of some of the best events in town this year. Well it is time for you to sit back and enjoy “The Official London Design Festival Celebration“, a short film featured on our SQUA.RE Events channel.

This breathtaking editorial in the latest October 2009 issue of W magazine is indeed “a work of art”. Models Raquel Zimmermann and Freja Beha Erichsen star and pose of the always amazing photography duo Inez & Vinoodh, as they discover amazing contemporary art, suitably titled “Art and Commerce”, the editorial is indeed a brilliant display of fashion and art together.

Both Raquel and Freja gaze at everything from modern architecture, contemporary sculptures and pop-art paintings at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Featuring the work of artists such as Pablo Picasso, Franz West, Duane Hanson, Mel Ramos, David Smith, Ruth Francken, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Francois-Xavier Lalanne, Aristide Maillol, Sophie Calle and Frank Gehry, Chuck Close, Gilbert & George, Niki de Saint Phalle and Auguste Rodin. Given the location, one of my personal favourite in London, the Victoria and Albert Museum, given the  large and highly selective guest list, which includes many of the top names in the creative and luxury industries and given the occasion, the London Design Festival’s momentum at the end of this month, we cannot hide our excitement to be there and to be meeting with many of our friends from the city of London and worldwide. It seems you don’t always have to go all the way to Las Vegas to experiment modern architectural innovation. London is preparing for a series of fascinating city landmarks, starting for example with the Shard at the upcoming London Bridge Quarter, which is to become the highest skyscraper ever seen in the United Kingdom, and one of the tallest in Europe.

Designed by Renzo Piano, one of the most respected living architects, the tower will stand at 310 m (1,017 ft) tall and have 72 floors. The design, says Piano, is “firmly based on the historic form of London’s mast and spires.” The building itself will be an entire ecosystem integrating offices, restaurants, housing, a luxury hotel and spa with public places at high level, ensuring an all-encompassing hub in the city.
