In his latest exhibition at the Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York, legendary photographer and artist, David LaChapelle enthralls with great controversy, “American Jesus”. The photographs depict the great Michael Jackson as a modern day martyr, in a tribute for the late legend’s epic life. The result of the notorious exhibition exams the state of the Catholic Church in today’s pop culture.

In his first solo exhibition since 2003, Los Angeles Surrealist-Pop artist Mark Ryden turns to the holy and disgusting to raise eye brows and cause controversies. In his exquisite exhibition at the Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York (from April 29-June 5, 2010), titled “The Gay 90s Olde Tyme Art Show” (in this particular case, the ‘90s’ are referring to the 1890s), Ryden plays with the idealism of the 1890s while addressing the role of kitsch and nostalgia in contemporary American culture, “In the modern era, sentimentality and beauty have been disdained in the art world,” the artist explains. “This new work is explores the line between attraction and repulsion to kitsch, and between beauty and banality.”

The first time I encountered a Youssef Nabil photograph a few years back, it was that beautiful picture of “Natcha Atlas Fume le Naguilé (2000)”. I remember how captivating it was, it reminded of all those Egyptian films of the golden age that I grew up watching, particularly those by Samia Gamal and Farid Al-Atrash. I knew then I was in love with the work of Youssef Nabil.
