The last collection by the late legend is a spectacle of absolute craftsmanship, reminding us of how the world of arts will miss such immense talent. Held at a private location for a select few, the show was a tribute in mourning for Alexander McQueen, models wearing the theatrics of utter genius to slow operatic music. Each dress was more spectacular than the last, filled with beautiful details and particular, brilliant tailoring. Each dress looked like a canvas of Renaissance painting; McQueen drew influence from Byzantine art, paintings by the Old Masters, Angels and Medieval beauty, one particular draped dress featured a print of painting with angels which was purely magnificent, all leading to the stunning dress at the very end, with gold statuesque feathered coat… Breath-takingly mesmerizing.
The legendary German duo have been collaborating constantly and creatively lately, Karl Lagerfeld and supermodel Claudia Schiffer bring to life the legend of Frida Kahlo, the Mexican artist who often projected her own pain through self-portraits and extravagant colors. This beautiful editorial, titled “Bildschön (Picture Perfect)”, replicates Frida’s style and some of her most famous self-portraits.
21st Century imagery blurs the boundaries between what is art and what is graphics. Art is a word that summarizes quality of communication. Some of the slickest and most impactful contemporary imagery is created by the advertising world – after all, they have the budget for it. Just because an image is in a magazine and used for a commercial purpose doesn’t make it not able to be art – IF it has a high level of communication.
Today is a sad day indeed; the world is still in shock. The terrible and extremely devastating news of Alexander McQueen’s suicide has not been digested yet. The fashion world did not just lose a fashion designer, but in fact the whole world lost an artist.
The brilliance of McQueen will never be outshined. A true artist, one who can never be duplicated.
“I dream my painting, and then I paint my dream.”
And so the artist did paint capturing his dreams, thoughts, hopes, and melancholies onto the canvas. But what many are not aware of is that behind the beauty of Van Gogh’s landscapes, portraits and still-lives, the artist deeply examined the emotional and intellectual context of his art through the written word.
Charbel Zeidan, also known as Cherry (or Cherry Ontherocks) is a vastly talented artist. He’s a fashion designer, illustrator and photographer, working for one of the most successful couture houses right now, Cherry is head designer and in-house photographer at Elie Saab. After studying Interior Architecture in the Fine Arts section at the Lebanese University in Beirut, Cherry went on to release his demons, or as would put it, his “naive, childish yet deep and sophisticated” demons.
This season, Pringle of Scotland, a brand known for its luxuriously understated knitwear and twinsets, will intrigue and marvel London Fashion Week attendees with its collaboration with artists from London’s Serpentine Gallery.
Martin Margiela (the elusive designer who recently retired after over 20 years, but his team is continuing his legacy) is the least likely designer to collaborate with a very well known musician, but if it was going to happen, lead singer of R.E.M Michael Stipe would be the perfect person.
“Michael Stipe has used various means of expression of his creativity. A major part of his work is a reflection on the obsolete technology of modern times how fast it evolves, devices that one were pioneering and innovative quickly becoming outmoded and archaic. The microcassette he has created for Maison Martin Margiela is in the continuity of this work, and marks his first foray in working with sterling silver”
As I hope you had a chance to see in our film, the highlight of the recent Pavilion of Art and Design was certainly the truly avant garde design of Carpenters Workshop Gallery. If not, check it out and I promise you will be compelled by the gallery’s groundbreaking design-art pieces.
If you ever wonder what would happen if legendary artist Keith Haring decided to toy around with fashion, this would be the inevitable result, and these results are why we love fashion so much, this is art converting into fashion.
Just a few weeks ago, we shared with you the VIP opening and visit of the Pavilion of Art and Design on Berkeley Square. Today it is time to share the experience, as we have filmed and walked through the galleries with some of the exhibitors to create an exciting SQUA.RE Events film. Controversial and much admired artist Maurizio Cattelan collaborates with one of our favorite fashion magazines, W for their November’s “The Art Issue”. The result is a beyond surreal editorial starring legendary supermodel, icon and muse to many, Linda Evangelista.

Austrian artist, Erwin Wurm knows how to play with objects, integrating humans and mere objects in perfect agreement, forcing the viewer to ponder without being sure what they are pondering about. Intelligent art makes you think, and rarely gives you answer.
Erwin Wurm photographed legendary supermodel, Claudia Schiffer for the November 2009 issue of Vogue Germany in an editorial titled “Kunst Pausen”. The supermodel is featured in compromising positions with various household objects (a broom, chairs, sofas, plates and what seems like detergent containers!); it felt as if Claudia Schiffer was part of the furniture. If Andy Warhol is known for his groundbreaking philosophy, the above statement is certainly one of its key founding thoughts and it is also the opening line of Pop Life, the latest exhibition at the Tate Modern in London.

The exhibition, which before being named Pop Life, went through the potential names of “Sold Out” and “Warhol’s Children”, is an exploration of the neo-pop generation from the late 1970s to today, who all succeeded in turning their name into a brand, and whose work explores the relationship between art, commerce and pop culture.
Below is a visual summary of the most notable rooms after a fascinating visit at the Tate Modern today. Read the rest of this entry »
