For those of you whom, just like us, believe in classic heritage, craftsmanship and timeless style, the world of vintage fashion must certainly be no stranger. As you might have read in my previous chronicle, Atelier Mayer brings you all of the above, along with the convenience of sending the items right to your door. In fact this week has been a fascinating tour of fashion history for me as I have had the chance to discover the online store’s latest additions, during their private preview on Saint James’ Street in London.

Just see below for a series of exciting insights.

Yong - Be a Star for the Night

Yong’s classic white dress at the centre above was part of a glamourous series in the main room, and it represents a symbolic part of the spirit of the store: “being a star for the night“. Moreover, it seems we are not the only ones saying it, as Vogue was photographing the dress that very morning. Yong Hei Fong is a special case on Atelier Mayer: a new London-based designer, he is championed on Vogue and is the 2002 winner of the American Express Innovation Award. Yong recreated exclusively for Atelier Mayer these three classic dresses — of which just the names are already inspiring: the Artemis, Athena and Apollo dresses. Read the rest of this entry »

Beautiful model Sigrid Agren looks stunning in the most elegant frocks this season, in the latest Numéro magazine #107. Photographed by Sebastian Kim and styled by Charles Varenne, the ambiance is glamorous 1940s-esque and jewelry is most spectacular, perfectly reminiscent of one of this season’s ultimate style reference, Alfred Hitchcock (like herehere and here).

Jungle Fever” never looked so chic.

Brazilain exotica, Raquel Zimmermann taps into her savage-animal-femme-fatale instincts, with the help of fabulous photography duo, Inez & Vinoodh, to bring us the most exotic editorial we have witnessed for a while (well, since this fabulous collaboration), playfully titled “Fur Play”, for the November issue of Vogue Paris.

The UNIQLOCK is digital art. It’s a new stylish luxury clock of the digital age. But also, the UNIQLOCK is the creation and the original front window of fascinating Japanese brand UNIQLO — the brand “making good casual clothes available for all to wear”.

Born in June 2007, the clock is still growing today. The above features its 6th season, the ‘Cashmere Knit’ season, which is part of a huge “schedule-within-the-clock” of fashion, dance and music set within numerous cities around the world.

It is a creative digital clock, which just like UNIQLO clothes, is made for all: the widget is available for all bloggers, and for anyone who wishes to use it on Facebook, Bebo or iGoogle. The UNIQLOCK has become a true social trend online, added by millions of people. Read the rest of this entry »

I do believe there are few people in this world who are true style icons, who follow fashion religiously and without shame, often launching trends and sometimes causing scrutiny from the average people who think that just because they know how to pronounce “Vogue” they know much about fashion. The artist of Irish descent and heiress of the Guinness family, Daphne Guinness is definitely one of those people whose style is daring, fierce and passionate.

After collaborating with Vogue Italia several times, which resulted in spectacular editorials, Daphne Guinness stars in yet another editorial photographed by the photographer of fierceness, Steven Klein (also male-super-model Tyson Ballou in the supporting role). The editorial, titled “The Classy Daphne”, displays a darker and moodier side of Daphne, infused by the elegant pieces she’s wearing throughout, in black, white and dramatic animal prints courtesy of Dolce&Gabbana. Celebrating their love for the Russian beauty, Natasha Poly, fashion cult favorite Muse magazine dedicated an outrageous editorial titled “Super Trouper” (perhaps an ode to ABBA!), photographed by Sølve Sundsbø featuring Geisha power and 80s fierceness (and a shocking customized fake Chanel jacket!!!) as part of their issue #19 titled “Natasha Obsessed“.

Following our friends at London’s hippest independent spirits brand, Brockmans gin, we have been invited to the launch of London’s new electro-rock duo: The Big Pink. The night was sponsored by Dazed and Confused, by the band’s prestigious label 4AD (who notably signed the Pixies and Dead Can Dance), and of course by Brockmans gin, who ensured a continued supply of exceptional drinks and brambles throughout a long night of fun, music and celebration.

The Big Pink Album Launch with Brockmans Gin

Strategically happening just at the beginning of Fashion Week, the night didn’t lack of fashion hipsters and models of all types; in fact they stylishly overtook the scene, making the night only more so fabulous, at a midway between the best we could expect of both the East and West end scenes, right in the midst of Charlotte Street’s busy hub at Charlotte Street Blues Bar. Controversial and much admired artist Maurizio Cattelan collaborates with one of our favorite fashion magazines, W for their November’s “The Art Issue”. The result is a beyond surreal editorial starring legendary supermodel, icon and muse to many, Linda Evangelista.

Photographed by PierPaolo Ferrari and styled by Camilla Nickerson, together with Linda and Cattelan, conceived a politically and religiously charged fantastic editorial, causing you to contemplate many of the society-reflecting images. The images are bound to raise eyebrows, cause some scrutiny and stir controversy, the way W always wants it to be. Read the rest of this entry »

Courage is the price that life exacts for granting peace. The soul that knows it not, knows no release from little things; knows not the livid loneliness of fear.Amelia Earhart

Develop Self Directedness

One of the most compelling aspects of life is the notion that we are in control.  When we truly comprehend that what happens in our life is derived from the decisions we make, that we control the seconds, it is then we are able to grasp the incredible self agency inherent inside of us. Our spirit is empowered, and our self directedness will outline our experiences, challenges, defeats, and our victories. Read the rest of this entry »

Austrian artist, Erwin Wurm knows how to play with objects, integrating humans and mere objects in perfect agreement, forcing the viewer to ponder without being sure what they are pondering about. Intelligent art makes you think, and rarely gives you answer.

SQUA.RE Link: Vogue Germany

Erwin Wurm photographed legendary supermodel, Claudia Schiffer for the November 2009 issue of Vogue Germany in an editorial titled “Kunst Pausen”. The supermodel is featured in compromising positions with various household objects (a broom, chairs, sofas, plates and what seems like detergent containers!); it felt as if Claudia Schiffer was part of the furniture.
