The 66th Venice Film Festival saw the premier of the long awaited Tom Ford film, an adaptation of the 1964 novel by Christopher Isherwood. ‘A Single Man’ which Tom Ford directed, co-produced, cowrote and called “the most personal thing” he’s ever done premiered to rave reviews from respectable film critics. “People who don’t know me well will be very surprised by the film. It shows a different side of me.” States the eminent fashion designer.
The low budget film, which was shot in only 21 days, stars Colin Firth and the beautiful and talented Julianne Moore (I still can’t get over her amazing performance in one of my all time favorite films ‘Magnolia‘, particularly in this scene), there’s also a small cameo appearance by Tom Ford’s regular model Jon Kortajarena, in what is expected to be a visually stunning and elegant production (and the trailer is proof of that). The story is set in early-Sixties Los Angeles, and follows a day in the life of a gay British literature professor wrestling with the sudden death of his longtime partner.
The Times UK (which gave the movie 4 out of 5 stars) called it “a thing of heart-stopping beauty… Rest assured: Tom Ford is the real deal.” Variety said: “Luminous and treasurable, despite its imperfections. An impressive helming debut for fashion designer Tom Ford.”
In a recent Interview with WWD, Tom Ford said: “… Of course I’m terrified because in a way it’s the most personal thing I’ve ever done and it’s the thing that is the most expressive of who I am. If you know me as a fashion designer, people would think that I’m one thing — slick, sexy. That’s something that I do as a product. This (film) for me was the first pure artistic expression that I’ve ever created so in that way it’s much more personal to me and I’m more vulnerable in a way because it is so personal.”
